Having grown up in Cobalt, Ontario (Climatic Zone 2), a silver mining town and the Best Old Town I Know, I had made attempts to grow apple trees there, but with little success. When I first saw Salt Spring Island in 1978, the gardener in me saw "heaven", and I immediately started to get connected to that island. It was within a year of that first visit that I had bought a 5-acre parcel of freshly logged land in the more remote south end, home to hippies and the deer. |
